Selfridges // London // Christopher Kane

This small space in Selfridges came with it the brief to design a folly or sculpture, along a few set ideas or themes, decided by Selfridges.

We saw the opportunity of Selfridges’ Gravity theme, to encapsulate found and hoarded objects, floating them in space, and transforming the mundane into something beautiful and precious. These encapsulated moments, become integral to the whole, symbiotically connecting the ethereal and transparent to the solid and industrial.

The sculpture is formed of 113 carefully curated objects, fastidiously positioned and encapsulated in resin. These are then supported and connected by a highly polished steel structure. The Monolithic concrete base conceals a mirrored interior and LED uplight that gives the whole structure its Crystalline appearance.

Objects cast in resin by Midton Acrylics, these were then carefully ordered and plotted around the sculpture. Once agreed these were sent to Buzzoni who drilled the structural elements. With the addition of the Monolithic concrete elements, clad by Mass concrete, these were all assembled in an evening.
